I believe Microsoft Word has an option for "different 1st page header" or some such option! These headers are really tripping me up I need to use THIS header for the Title page: "Running head: TITLE OF YOUR PAPER" and THIS header for all subsequent pages: "TITLE OF YOUR PAPER" (see the OWL at Purdue) Anne_marie_oregon wrote:It is really important, as a college student, to be able to use APA format. I cannot seem to resolve this by using the Apply Styles or using left and right header. I have tried higlighting all of the text on my 2nd header and selecting "Header left" on the 2nd header - but as soon as I do that, the 1st header also goes to "Header left" instead of maintaining a unique style for the first header My header simply reverts to page 1 (just as the other users have said). Please help! ~Anne Marie (Nursing student)Īpply Styles applies paragraph styles. Generally, in order to have different headers on different pages, the pages must have different page styles, not different paragraph styles for the headers. In your case, since pages 2+ have the same header, they can have the same page style, but the first page must have a different page style in order to have a different header. * the page number style (which as Chris correctly points out is already available with a double-click) Then I want every other page's header to read simply Just trying to make the first page have a running header which reads: Note that when you change a header on a page, you're actually changing the header for the page style of that page, not just that one page.įloatilla wrote:I would hardly call this solved. * which page you would like the number to start at * where you want the number (top or bottom, left, middle or right) I am suggesting adding an Insert > Page Number, which pops up a dialogue that allows you to select: ![]() I am not suggesting removing "Page Number" from the insert field menu. Most people wouldn't need to insert page numbering more than once in a document, so a dialogue box would hardly slow people down. For example, the first page of a letterhead typically has a different header, or the first page of a report might have no header or footer, while the other. is that intuitive? I've bookmarked this page in case I want to start numbering on page 2, because I wouldn't be able to figure it out on my own. If I want the numbering to start at a different number or on a different page, I have to double click the number or change the page style. I then have to change the alignment to right and then Insert > Field > page number. I click Insert > Footer and end up in the footer. I am then expected to realise that, like most people, I want it at the bottom right corner of my screen instead of in the middle of my sentence. If I am typing a document and click insert > field > page number, I end up with a 1 in the middle of my sentence. Sorry that it has taken me so long to reply. This is quite possible able to be done, but it is not at all intuitive from the current method of adding page numbers. I want to start the numbering on the third page with the number "1". I often have a title and contents page in my documents. It would be much more intuitive if it asked you if you don't want anything unusual then it only adds one extra click per document. I believe it is possible to start the numbers on page 2 (starting at 2) but I couldn't remember how, find how in the help or get anyone to answer my support request on it. I often have to produce Court documents that are not supposed to have (or do not usually have) numbers on the first page. Some examples that show when this would be useful are: These would include what page you wanted the numbers to start on and what number you wanted them to start at. ![]() It would be great if when one clicked Insert > Field > Page Number they were given a little dialogue box with the common variations in page numbering styles.
